I can't get OE help to work.

When I reply to a message the "to" field contains the date and time and will not send until I delete them.

I had to reinstall the system software (or OE5) and now all my messages and contacts are gone.

How do I get the password protection OE 4.5 had?

The password on startup feature was removed from Outlook Express 5. The reasons for doing this were twofold:

1) The password scheme in Outlook Express 4.x was easily bypassed. Simply removing the Outlook Express Preferences file would allow anyone to remove the user password.

2) Apple is providing operating-system-level password and voiceprint logon in Mac OS 9.

For these two reasons, the feature was removed. Security, like password login, is best handled at the operating system level, not the application level. Even with the password feature in previous versions of Outlook Express, someone could easily walk up to your computer and delete any file, including your Outlook Express mail.

This being said, there is an AppleScript at AppleScript Central named "Password - No Window" which will not open anything until the password is entered. You can even protect multiple identities with separate passwords. Follow the installation instructions in the Read Me included with the AppleScript.

How can I move messages between identities or computers?

Drag the message(s) you would like to move to the desktop or if you have many messages, to a folder on the desktop. This will create a text file with an OE type and creator code. Change to the identity you would like to move the messages to and just drag them into the folder of your choice. Watch a QuickTime movie here.

I would like to share only some of my contacts with other OE for Mac users but the "Export Contacts" option only allows the export of my whole address book.

You can get the AppleScript "Export Selected Contacts OE-OE" by Paul Berkowitz at AppleScript Central. Follow the installation instructions in the Read Me included with the AppleScript. With it you can choose a few or all your contacts and import or export them to and from another copy of OE 5 or to another identity.

How can I import my contacts from OE Windows?

You can get the AppleScript "Export Selected Contacts OE-Win" by Paul Berkowitz at AppleScript Central. Follow the installation instructions in the Read Me included with the AppleScript. With it you can choose a few or all your contacts and import or export them to and from OE 5.5 for Windows.

Does OE5 support templates?

Although there is no template function in OE5 you have a number of ways to easily create templates.

1) Create your template and save it to the drafts folder. When you want to send, it copy it to the outbox by option+dragging it, double click on the copy in the outbox to open it and address it and make any changes you need to make before sending.

2) You can create the template in a text editor (SimpleText, TexEdit etc.) and use the "Insert Text file" AppleScript from the Script menu. For more on AppleScripts

3) You can create a rule which uses the "reply" action. This is good for auto-responses.

4) You can create a clipping file (not text file) and drag it into the body of a message.

5) You can also get OneClick and use the insert text button in the System Bar. The System Bar is sold as a standalone product for those that do not have the full version of OneClick. <http://www.westcodesoft.com> You will be able to edit/organize any entries in the new System Bar v2. They are stored as text files in the OneClick folder in Preferences.

I can't get OE help to work.

The help files use IE's scripting. Make sure that the "Enable Scripting" box is checked on the "Web Content" page in IE's preferences.

You may have some left over libraries that can be deleted. In your extensions folder delete the folders "ActiveX Controls" and "MS Library Folder".

Launch Internet Explorer
Launch Outlook Express
(In that order)

This will launch "Microsoft Internet First Run" which will reinstall the libraries you need.

How can I print my address book?

You can get the AppleScript "Address Book List" at Applescriptcentral it will print an alphabetical list of your contacts. You can get the AppleScript "Contact Sheets" which will print all the details of one or more contacts. If you need formatting for labels or a day planner you will need to export your contacts to a text file and then import them into a program like Now Contact or Palm Desktop which are capable of many print formats.

How do you alphabetize the names in a group?

Unfortunately OE doesn't give you this option but you can get the AppleScript "Group Sort" at Applescriptcentral. Follow the installation instructions in the Read Me included with the AppleScript. Then you can run the AppleScript to alphabetize your groups. This script is also included in the "Group Stuff" package of AppleScripts which will allow you to do other things with your groups you can't do with OE alone.

How can I send a message to a group and not have all the addresses show to the recipients?

You can address the To: field to yourself or someone innocuous and put the other recipients in the Bcc: field but this doesn't assure you that the addresses won't be in the header as some ISPs will do. You can also get the AppleScript "Separate Group Messages" at AppleScript Central which will send a separate message to each recipient. Follow the installation instructions in the Read Me included with the AppleScript.

How can I keep two user's email separate?

In order to effectively separate your emails they need to have different addresses. Then you can separate them a number of ways. The easiest is to make two rules which would put the emails for each of you into separate folders. More info The other obvious way is to create two "identities" and then each of you would have a completely separate set of folders and you can password protect them if you care to. More info

How can I get a return receipt?

Go to "Accounts" on the Tools menu. Create a new "send only" account (enter only the SMTP information). Under "Additional Headers" on the options page, create an entry where Header is: Return-Receipt-To: and value is your email address, say "John Doe" jdoe@somewhere.org or just "jdoe@somewhere.org". This should work using it when you want return receipts and using your standard account for when you don't.

Please note that there is nothing in the internet email specs which forces mail servers or clients to honor your request for a return receipt. Many corporate LAN systems with internet gateways (like MS Exchange) tend to do it, since they often offer the feature internally. People connecting to an ISP and other more Internet oriented mail systems tend not to.

When I reply to a message the "to" field contains the date and time and will not send until I delete them.

OE5 cannot properly handle messages that come from certain mail servers that use a '>from' line instead of 'From:'. So the wrong data is shown in the mail folder listing and when you reply to a message you get the appended date stamp in the address field.

There is an applescript at the Unnofficial OE site which will fix this
<http://www.macemail.com/oe/as/all.shtml>

Look for "Fix Broken From Lines". If run in conjunction with a mail rule on incoming messages from an account with this problem, "Fix Broken From Lines" will alter the message.

I had to reinstall the system software (or OE5) and now all my messages and contacts are gone.

More than likely you now have two or more copies of OE5 and "Identities" folders and the alias you are using is launching the wrong copy of OE. First review the section about what and where OE5 expects to find here.

Do a search for "Outlook Express" and find where the multiple copies are. You want the latest version, OE5.02 or better, and make that the program folder you use and have your aliases point to the copy of OE5 there.

Open OE5 and create a new temporary Identity from Switch Identities (File Menu) with a unique name that will be easy to search for. Dismiss the setup procedure as this is but a temporary Identity. Quit OE and do a search for the new identity you just created. When you find it this will be the Identity folder that OE5 is using and is where your lost Identity needs to be moved to.

Now do a search for "Identities" and in those folders you will find your identity(s) folder. If you have not given your identity a particular name you will find more than one named "Main Identity". Rename those "Main Identity" folders with unique names (Mom, Dad, Fido etc.). Now you can copy those folders (each with it own set of files, "database", "database cache", "mailing lists", "messages" etc.) to the folder where you found the new Identity so that OE5 will find them. Please refer here to see how this Identities folder should look.

Now when OE5 opens you will find that you have multiple users and can switch between them using "Switch Identities" from the File menu (cmd+shft+Q). Find the one with the info you were missing and you can now delete the other "identities" along with the other copies of OE and other associated files. If you need to retain some messages that you received you can follow the instructions here.

Somehow I moved my inbox into another folder and now I can't move it back.

This is an odd situation because you are not supposed to be able to move the inbox but this has happened to a few and all you need to do is to shut down and restart OE and the inbox will be moved back to where it belongs.

I like to file my replies to certain messages in the same folder as the original message. Is there an easier way to accomplish this than having to find it in the "Sent Items" folder and then dragging it to the proper folder?

Get the AppleScript "File Reply in Same Folder" at AppleScript Central. Follow the installation instructions in the Read Me included with the AppleScript as this script does require a little bit of preparation and forethought but can be very useful for certain correspondences.

I have just bought a new Mac and want to move my OE identities from my old Mac.

Find your "Identity(s)" on the old Mac (HD:Documents:Microsoft User Data:Identities:), rename it to something unique (ie. Previous Identity, G3 Mail) then move it to the Identities Folder of the new Mac (New HD:Documents:Microsoft User Data:Identities:), open OE on the new Mac and you will have multiple Identities which you will be asked to choose one. If you have no new messages downloaded on the new machine you can trash the folder (New HD:Documents:Microsoft User Data:Identities:Main Identity). If you do have messages you want to save in the new Main Identity follow these instructions.
