Do you know all four ways you can easily make an alias since OS8.5?
You can highlight the file or folder you would like to make an alias to and....
These all work fine but leave the "alias" appended to the filename. The fourth option is to hold the option and command keys as you drag it to another folder or desktop. As you begin to drag you will notice the little bent arrow appear on the icon letting you know that you are now moving an alias. When you move this to another folder location the "alias" is no longer attached to the end of the filename saving you the need to delete it afterwards. With the aid of spring loaded folders you can drag the alias anywhere on your hard drive with ease.
